Plastic Cutting Board, why so popular?

There has been a long standing debate on which material is best used for cutting boards in the kitchen. Plastic cutting board is becoming more popular because there are many benefit aside from the fact that they come in different colors, sizes and shapes. Aesthetically it is better. They are also more affordable and easier to sanitize. The smaller kind can be put in the dishwasher.


There are others who express concern on the longevity of plastic cutting board. Since knives slice through the material, it is more prone to be damaged.

Just like wooden cutting boards, a plastic cutting board can absorb bacteria but with proper care, this can me well maintained and bacteria may be cleaned off. It is also advisable to not use the same cutting board on different produce. Example, if you cut a meat on one cutting board, don’t use it for fish or vegetables. This will prevent cross contamination.

You will need:

Hot water
Soap
Sink or dishpan
Brush
Dry clean towel

Directions:

Fill your sink or dishpan with hot and soapy water.
Put your plastic cutting board.
Brush the cutting board while it is still in the water.
Rinse it well.
Dry the plastic cutting board with dry clean towel.

Below is how to sanitize your plastic cutting board.

You will need:

Vinegar
Cold water
Dry clean towel

Directions:

Put a vinegar cleaning solution after using it.
Submerge the plastic cutting board in a dishpan and pour 2 ½ cups of vinegar and ½ cup of water.
Leave it for ten minutes.
Rinse with cold water.
Dry with clean towel.

Remember that it is time to throw your plastic cutting board when the surface is rough or when it starts to smell.
